Squid Game
The so-so dystopian thriller—think Hunger Games Meets Parasite, With More Violence—has been such an international hit that it’s destined to become Netflix’s most popular show of all time. 455 unlucky people, desperate for money, are invited to play a series of popular children’s games. Although the eventual winner is promised a good cash prize, few of these contestants know that losing a game means paying with their lives. Be prepared to enjoy the entire first season in one sitting.
Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha
This charming romantic comedy follows a big city dentist (Shin Min-a) who is expelled from her clinic and decides to start over in a small seaside town. As she adjusts to her new, less charming life, she meets a real-life village girl (Kim Sun Ho).
Mine
Much in the context of recent Korean shows that offer a violent portrait of the lives of the country’s stratospheric rich (see: The Penthouse and Sky Castle, both unfortunately not on Netflix yet), Mine centers around a powerful chaebol family, and specifically on their two daughters-in-law trying to acquire their identities—and the restoration of what they have—in a patriarchal society. Part Succession, Part DOWNTON Deer, Part Big Little Lies (murder, revealed in Episode 1), sees a quirky and boring plot and two adorable actresses, Lee Bo Young and Kim Seo Hyung, who are very reminiscent of Tilda Swinton in I love with her impeccable style and balance.
Vincenzo
Resident Heart Song Joong-ki plays the main character, Vincenzo, who was adopted by the head of an Italian crime family when he was young and grew up to be a mafia consultant. Infighting and betrayal force Vincenzo to flee to Korea, where he finds a new enemy to take down: a ruthless conglomerate.
The Uncanny Counter
In this famous supernatural hit, a disabled teenager is recruited into a supernatural group known as the Counters, which hunts down evil spirits who have escaped from the afterlife to possess human hosts and corrupt them to commit terrible acts. As part of the crew of demon hunters (the front of their secret business is a noodle shop), he develops supernatural and psychic abilities and leads a double life-a high school student by day, eliminating evil by night.
Stranger
This beloved crime thriller was named one of the best TV shows of 2017 by the New York Times.Alessandro Louis Vuitton’s Moses by Donna plays a charming detective who teams up with an empathetically-defiant prosecutor (a childhood brain surgery that left him with a severely low IQ) to solve a murder. Along the way, they discover deeper and more sinister forces in the game, in the name of political intrigues orchestrated by the favorite villain of Korean TV: those conglomerates that are too powerful and don’t work very well.
