FACE MAKEUP GUIDELINES

To create an even tone and beautiful makeup, heed these tips.

1. Buy good makeup brushes. There should be at least four of them in the basic set—for applying and blending shadows, for powder and blush, and for foundation. We’ve gathered everything you need to know about makeup brushes in one place.
Whenever possible, use products only for their intended purposes. In extreme cases, you can replace one tool with another (for example, use a concealer instead of a base under the shade), but for a perfect result, use a full set of cosmetics.
If you are using powder, do not try to apply as much product as possible to your face. The layer should be translucent, and in general, it is better to apply powder only to those areas where an oily sheen appears, for example, on the T-zone and chin. So you get the effect of light toning, and the skin will not look “overloaded” with cosmetics.

An example of beautiful makeup is in a video created specifically for Makeup.ru by a professional makeup artist.

MAKEUP APPLICATION ON THE FACE

If you are starting to learn the rules of makeup from scratch, the first thing to figure out is in what order to apply the cosmetics. See our step-by-step photo tutorial on how to make up your face!

1. Cleaning and moisturizing

Absolutely any makeup—day, evening, or art makeup—needs to start with skin preparation. Cleanse your face and apply moisturizer. Make a light massage of the face with your fingertips to enhance its action and tone the skin.

2. Makeup base

Spread the primer; it will prepare the skin for applying makeup and prolong its durability. How to choose your ideal tool is explained in this material.

3. Tone cream

At this stage, apply the main foundation to the skin. It doesn’t have to be foundation; pick the texture and shape that best suit you. Our simple test will help you figure it out. our

4. sculpting

Contouring is used to make facial features appear more chiseled and expressive. In evening make-up, “full” contouring using dark and light sculptors is appropriate, and for daytime or, for example, delicate wedding make-up, light sculpting is suitable, as in the photo below.

5. Concealer and corrector

Hide pinpoint imperfections of the skin—redness, acne, and scars—with a dense corrector, and apply a lighter concealer under the eyes. If you are planning a bright accent on the eyes, first do eye makeup and then apply concealer so that crumbled shadows and mascara do not spoil the tone.

6. Blush

Blush can be dry or creamy; the latter provides a more natural result. But in any case, shade the product properly so that there are no bright streaks and spots on the face.

7. highlighter

Use a highlighter if you want to add radiance to your face and give it a fresher, younger look. Highlighter is appropriate for both daytime and evening make-up; it all depends on the intensity of the application and the texture of the product. In everyday makeup, you should not use a highlighter with large shimmer particles.

8. Anchoring

Use powder and/or setting spray to make your makeup last as long as possible.

HOW DO I USE FOUNDATION TO PAINT?

You need to use the foundation after you have completed all the preparatory procedures—you have cleansed your face, applied a moisturizer, and used a primer.

  • To cleanse your face before makeup, it is better not to use micellar water. Do not forget that its main purpose is to remove impurities and makeup. And if the active ingredients, micelles, remain on the skin, they will try to “attract” a fresh layer of foundation, so the product will be distributed unevenly.
  • Wait until the moisturizer is completely absorbed before applying primer. Otherwise, when shading the foundation, problems may arise.
  • You can apply foundation in one of three ways.

Sponge

With the help of a sponge, you can achieve a uniform, natural coverage as well as effectively hide all the boundaries of the applied product. It is best to spread the foundation with patting movements with a slightly damp sponge to blend it even easier. This method, however, has two drawbacks: firstly, the sponge absorbs the foundation, and the consumption of the product increases. Secondly, the sponge needs special care.

brush

The brush allows you to create denser coverage, so this method is ideal for creating evening makeup or if you have problem skin.

  • You can use a flat brush or a fluffy brush, whichever is more comfortable for you. But in any case, it should be made of artificial fibers because, unlike natural fibers, it does not absorb liquid cream.
  • Do not squeeze the foundation from the tube directly onto the brush. First, apply a couple of drops to the back of your hand and wait until the cream warms up a bit.
  • If you have chosen a round brush, the movements should also be circular. With a flat brush, you need to apply the product in
  • To make the movements easier, try not to press on the brush.

fingers

It is more difficult to evenly distribute the foundation with your fingers than with a brush or sponge, but the product will be much more economically priced. Place a few dots all over the face and spread them over the skin with patting movements. In the end, make sure that you have worked on absolutely all areas and that there are no spots left on the skin.

How to Paint with Concealer

The main task of the concealer is to hide the “bruises” under the eyes and other minor skin imperfections (but it has other functions too).

  • Like the foundation, the concealer has a nude shade. However, it has a denser texture, and the color should not be chosen tone-on-tone but slightly lighter than the natural skin color.
  • Apply the concealer with a thin faux-hair brush, the applicator that comes with it, or directly from the stick. Blend with a foundation brush, a damp sponge, or your fingers.
  • Please note that concealer should be applied over foundation, not under it.
one
Under the eyes, the concealer should be applied in an inverted triangle shape, as shown in the diagram below.
3
Also highlight with the help of the concealer those areas that are usually hit by sunlight first: the bridge of the nose, the central part of the forehead, and the chin. This will make your face look fresher and healthier. Apply a little money to the area near the “wings” of the nose; as a rule, this is where the fine vascular network appears.
3
If necessary, locally apply concealer to other problem areas—to areas where there are acne, redness, or age spots.

How do I use a highlighter to paint?

Highlighter is a tonal tool that creates delicate “glare” on the face and, due to this, provides the effect of the skin being illuminated from the inside.

  • The texture of the highlighter can be creamy, dry, or liquid.
  • Cream and liquid highlighters should be applied with fingertips or a small synthetic brush and dried with a flat natural brush.
  • Highlighter may contain small shining particles (shimmer). This tool is best used for evening makeup. But the highlighter with a delicate satin sheen will come in handy when creating a daytime look.
Advice! If you have oily skin, you should not buy a highlighter with noticeable sparkles; it may look like an oily sheen on your skin.

  • As a rule, a highlighter is applied to those areas that need to be “highlighted.” Here are the main ones.
1. Cheekbones

Blend the highlighter along the cheekbones to enhance facial features. It is in this zone that the largest amount of highlighter should be concentrated.

2. Above and below the eyebrow

To balance the makeup, go over the highlighter above and below the eyebrow. Among other things, this trick will help visually make the eyebrows more accurate and sophisticated.

3. Bridge of the nose

Also, spread the highlighter along the back of the nose to visually narrow it. But do not add highlighter to the tip unless you want to visually shorten the nose.

4. Above the lip

A professional makeup artist’s classic trick for making lips voluminous and sensual Just add a drop of highlighter to the area above the upper lip.

5. Inner corners of the eyes

Put light-translucent “highlights” near the lacrimal openings to refresh the look, and with it, your whole image.

How a highlighter is applied depends on its texture. Learn more about each in this video tutorial.

HOW DO YOU USE A BLUSH TO PAINT?

The rules for using foundation and concealer are relevant for any girl. But when it comes to blush, you should start with the shape of your face; it will tell you exactly where to apply it.

for an oval (elongated) face

Apply blush along the top line of the cheekbones, shaping them toward the temples. This way, you will draw attention to your cheekbones and divert it from the rounded lower part of the face.

for a round face

You probably want to visually reduce prominent cheeks if you have a round face. With the help of blush, it is very easy to do this. First, apply them to the “apples” of the cheeks; for this, smile and remember where the most protruding part is. Next, blend the blush, trying to “take away” the pigment under the cheekbones.

for a square face

Your task is to soften facial features. Apply blush directly to the apples of your cheeks in circular motions to shift the focus to this part of the face.

for a triangular face

To divert attention from the angular jaw, shift the focus of makeup to the central part of the face. Distribute blush along the upper line of the cheekbones; add a highlighter here.

Advice! A good alternative to the usual dry blush can be a tint; the tool provides the most natural result.

Applying a Face Corrector

Contouring is perhaps the hardest part of creating the perfect face tone. As with blush, a lot depends on the shape of the face. But if we talk about the basic rule, then it sounds like this: everything that you want to highlight, highlight; everything that you want to hide, darken. In any case, the sculpting scheme will contain the following steps:

1. Highlight

The light corrector should be applied to the same areas as the highlighter. These products are interchangeable, and many beauty brands, when creating palettes for contouring, include a highlighter instead of a light corrector. You can also replace the concealer with a light corrector without shimmer, and vice versa.

2 Blackout

Apply a dark sculpting agent under the cheekbones, as well as along the sides of the lower jaw. This will help make the cheekbones more visible and the jaw more refined.

Also, apply a dark pencil along the edges of the bridge of the nose, and do not forget to apply blush to make the makeup look harmonious in the end.

The most important part of the sculpting process is shading. First, blend the light corrector with a sponge or brush, and then move on to the dark one so as not to get the effect of a dirty face. Make sure you blend all the borders perfectly.

HOW DO YOU USE A CONCEALER PALETTE?

If a regular concealer is designed to correct minor skin imperfections, then a palette of colored concealers or color correctors (there are both names) is designed to mask specific problems. For example, age spots, a reddish or yellowish complexion, and acne marks Color correction works due to the fact that one shade literally neutralizes another.

As a rule, a palette of color concealers includes several primary colors.

  • The violet color neutralizes yellowness, so it is effective in combating age spots and a dull, yellowish complexion.
  • The yellow color “overlaps” purple and blue, perfectly coping with the vascular network, bruises, and acne marks.
  • Pink or peach concealer helps cover up dark circles under the eyes.
  • Green concealer perfectly hides the redness of the skin and acne.

15 makeup hacks for every day

Makeup remains a kind of art, even if the daily procedure for its creation does not seem to us close to something sublime. A masterpiece on the face in a hurry to collect may not work out, but there are tricks that will allow you to make makeup more beautiful and better and also spend much less time on the whole process.

    Face

Do not self-medicate! In our articles, we collect the latest scientific data and the opinions of authoritative health experts. But remember: only a doctor can diagnose and prescribe treatment.

    1. If you need to get rid of a dull complexion but there is no time to apply a powder highlighter, replace it with a liquid highlighter and mix a drop or two of such products with a tonal foundation. Such a composition will simultaneously even out skin tone, mask imperfections, and create the desired radiance effect.
    2. There is no easier way to save time on the use of a day cream (note that you need to not only apply it; it is also important to wait until it is absorbed and dried) than to get a BB or CC cream that promises both skin care and an even skin tone.
    3. Did you know that the blush obtained with lipstick is in no way inferior in beauty to the one that appears on the cheeks thanks to the use of blush? This is true. With a stick of lipstick (soft, creamy textures are best), make a couple of strokes on the “apples” of the cheeks, and then blend them well with your fingertips. This technique will help you quickly refresh your complexion if you don’t have blush on hand, and it will also allow you to not carry this product with you at all, thus not loading your cosmetic bag with “superfluous.”
    4. During the day, you probably don’t have time (or sometimes the opportunity) to tint your face with foundation or powder it. Additional layers of these products will also not bring any benefit to the skin—on the contrary, they will only clog your pores more. Oily sheen will not take into account all these inconveniences, and for those whose skin is prone to its appearance, it will still appear. As a result, make it a rule to always carry a beauty product like mattifying wipes with you. You can forget about the ill-fated shine after wetting excess sebum with them, if not for the rest of the day then at least for several hours.
    5. Beautiful eyebrows over the past couple of years have gained the status of a kind of beauty cult, and for many, eyebrow gel has become an element of a basic cosmetic bag. but not for everyone. And not everyone always has this tool at hand. Instead, it can be a transparent lip balm, which is easy to gently smooth over the eyebrow hairs, or, surprisingly, hairspray—by sprinkling it on a clean mascara brush and running it along the arches of the eyebrows, you can give them the desired shape and fix

    Eyes

    1. A quick and easy way to create a cat-eye effect (or intensify it if you’ve already done it with flirty arrows) is to paint your lashes so that the strokes of the brush are directed towards the outer corner of the eye. The lashes will “fall” a little to one side, and the result will look like you glued a couple of false eyelashes on the outer edge of the eye.
    2. To make eyelashes thicker and more voluminous and the hairs themselves thicker, you must have been advised to at least try such a simple trick as applying mascara in several layers. Another trick that will help improve the result: after applying one layer, spread a little transparent powder over the eyelashes with a small fluffy brush. Ready? You can continue to use mascara; your eyelashes will look much more spectacular.
    3. Fans of smoky eyes know firsthand that dark shadows, applied in the right amount with a brush, do not miss the opportunity to crumble under the lower eyelid and “stick” to the already-applied foundation when applied. It becomes extremely problematic to remove colored powder from the skin without leaving dirty stains. Many makeup artists advise you to get out of the situation by starting the look with eye makeup. On clean skin, crumbled shadows can be easily brushed off with a brush.
    4. If in the morning you have been choosing which of the two dresses to wear for so long that time is running out, not allowing you to spend even a couple of minutes on applying eyeliner, try to fool the clock. While you are painting your eyelashes with quick strokes of mascara, twist them longer and rub them with a brush at their roots. Due to this, you will not only separate and “raise” your eyelashes better, giving them more volume, but also paint over the space between the hairs as if your mucous membrane were specially lined with a pencil. This technique works especially well if your mascara has a fluffy brush.
    5. If you use an eyelash curler but it takes a long time to get your eyelashes curled enough, preheat the curler—with a stream of hot air from a hair dryer or simply in your hands. A warm tool will give the lashes the desired curl much faster.

    Lips

    1. You can prepare your lips for lipstick application by making their skin smooth, soft, and exfoliated without the use of a special scrub. Do this while brushing your teeth: “walk” your brush over your lips. A few necessarily gentle and neat (the skin of the lips is still quite sensitive) circular movements will be enough to bring the lips into the best condition.
    2. In order for the lipstick to “lay” on the lips evenly and for the application to be comfortable, the skin must be not only smooth but also soft, silky, and sufficiently moisturized. Obviously, lip balm can lead to such a state of the lips; this is its function. But you need to use it not immediately before you put on lipstick but much earlier. For example, even at the stage of applying a day cream, by the time you “reach” the lips (their turn, as a rule, comes last), the balm is well absorbed and has properly prepared the lips.
    3. For lovers of bright lipsticks, the “tick” on the upper lip often brings the most trouble. The beauty and expressiveness of both the contour applied separately and the entire lip makeup depend on how to circle it. There is a way to quickly and easily outline a “tick” so that the result is perfect the first time: with a pencil or brush with lipstick, you need to draw a cross on the upper lip so that it fits exactly on the “tick.” After that, you can apply lipstick to the entire surface of your lips without worrying about smearing or uneven contouring.
    4. If you want to get a trendy matte effect on your lips but there is no lipstick with a suitable texture in your cosmetic bag, you can achieve the desired result without it. Apply your existing lipstick to your lips, and then take a transparent face powder (both loose and compact will do) and cover your lips with it over the lipstick. It is worth limiting yourself to the amount that will be comfortable for your lips.
    5. To achieve the maximum brightness of the shade of lipstick, you do not need to layer it on the lips by persistently and diligently drawing a colored rod over the skin. It is enough to apply the same concealer on the lips with which you mask dark circles under the eyes. It will play the role of a dense base and will not “eat” the saturation of the lipstick.

Are your expensive skincare product lines not getting the results you want? You probably aren’t using them in the right order. The effectiveness of a skincare product largely depends on how you layer it on your face. Scroll through this article to learn why layering is essential and the correct order to apply skin care products for maximum effect.

Why do I apply my skincare products in order?

This is because each skin care product has different concentrations of active ingredients. When applied in the correct order, the ingredients can penetrate the layers of the skin.

I usually start with the thinnest and work my way up to the thickest cream or moisturizer. It is best to apply the toner first, as it has the thinnest consistency, and then apply the sleeping mask (for night use), day cream, and moisturizer (for day use) last. Here is the ultimate guide to how to layer skin care products.

The Ultimate Guide to How to Apply Skin Care Products in Order:

    weekly skin care routine.

Cleansing (double cleansing) is the first step.

Start your skincare routine by double-cleansing your face. First, use the cleansing oil to dissolve all impurities on the skin, and then wipe it off. Then use a mild, water-based cleanser. Massage the face in a circular motion for 2–3 minutes to cleanse thoroughly, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

    Toner is the second step.

Cleaning opens up the pores of the skin, so your next toner should be applied. Toning minimizes pores on the skin and gently scrapes away old, dead skin cells to balance the skin’s pH and prepare it for the next product. The toner has a thin formula and is quickly absorbed. Choose a toner according to your skin’s concerns.

If you have oily skin and enlarged pores, choose a toner that contains beta-hydroxy acids (BHA) or alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). If you have dry skin, look for a toner that contains moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and rose water. For sensitive skin, use a moisturizing toner containing hyaluronic acid and glycerin.

    Step 3: Use Serum

Serums are full of powerful, concentrated active ingredients and antioxidants. Look for ingredients like vitamins E and C, resveratrol, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides. These ingredients protect the skin from environmental and UV damage, retain moisture, and protect it. The serum is lightweight and is absorbed almost instantly.

    Step 4: Eye Cream

The eye cream is soft and lightweight and is formulated to reduce puffiness, fine lines, and pigmentation. The skin around the eyes is fragile and sensitive and needs a special formula to retain moisture. Choose an eye cream that contains caffeine to tighten the skin under the eyes and minimize puffiness. Always choose fragrance-free products.

    Step 5: Spot Treatment

If you have acne-prone skin and use a spot treatment cream, apply it to your face now. Spot treatment creams contain powerful ingredients such as niacinamide, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid that can be used as targeted treatments. Apply to the affected area (acne lesions or blemishes, etc.) and do not apply it all over the face as it may dry out the skin.

    Moisturizer is the sixth step.

Apply a spot treatment and wait a few minutes before applying moisturizer. Instead of using a regular moisturizer, use products designed specifically for your skin type. Choose a moisturizer with powerful ingredients or antioxidants that can restore, hydrate, and improve skin texture. If you have oily skin, hydrate and exfoliate with a lightweight, water-based moisturizer with hyaluronic acid. For dry, sensitive skin, choose a moisturizer that contains antioxidants, ceramides, and peptides to soothe and soften the skin.

    Step 7: Use Face Oil

Use face oil only if your skin is dry. The face oil is light and quickly absorbed, leaving the skin hydrated, soft, and smooth.

Avoid this step if you have oily skin or if your skin doesn’t respond well to facial oils.

    Step 8: Apply moisturizer.

The moisturizer hydrates the skin and keeps it smooth and soft. They are available in lotion, cream, and gel form. If you have dry, combination, or normal skin, choose the cream formulation. However, if you have oily skin, opt for a light moisturizer that is both water- and gel-based.

    Step 9: Sunscreen

Regardless of the season, going out without sunscreen is a sin. It should be the last step in your daily skin care routine. Choose a mineral sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Choose a transparent and lightweight formula that does not exfoliate and blends easily after makeup.

    Step 9: Makeup.

If you need to cover up redness or bumps, finish them off with makeup. Choose a foundation (powder, liquid, or cream) or BB cream that suits your skin tone.

Your skin naturally recovers at night. A good nighttime skin care routine nourishes your skin even more. Here’s how to layer your skin care products for the perfect nighttime routine.

    skin care routine at night.

    Step 1: Cleanse twice.

Just like your daytime routine, your nighttime routine should start with double cleansing, which is non-negotiable. Remove makeup with a cleansing balm or oil. Cleaning oils help break down oily ingredients, including makeup, dirt, and grime. Use a mild, water-based cleanser to remove residual makeup.

    Toner is the second step.

To minimize pores, exfoliate the skin, and remove dead skin cells, you need to control your skin tone at night. Wait a few seconds for complete absorption before moving on to the next step. The toner also cleanses the skin of residue and helps prepare you for the next step. At night, use a toner that contains moisturizing ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid. You can also use a lactic acid toner for gentle exfoliation.

Optional: You can also layer various skin care boosters, such as moisture mist, essence, etc. All of them are light and rich in active ingredients, so they nourish the skin after using a toner.

    Step 3: Use Moisture Serum.

Our skin heals itself while we sleep. Therefore, it is recommended to apply anti-aging serums (e.g., retinol serums), medications, and exfoliating (AHA, BHA) treatments at night. It tightens the skin and promotes cell turnover to minimize signs of aging, giving you bright skin in the morning. If you have dry skin, you can also choose a moisturizing serum with hyaluronic acid.

    Step 4: Eye Cream

Turn on the eye cream! With the tip of your ring finger, gently massage the eye cream around your eyes. Wait a few seconds for it to soak in. Improve fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness by using an eye cream with a high concentration of antioxidants and peptides.

    Spot Treatment Cream (Step 5)

It is essential to use a spot treatment cream twice a day to reduce the appearance of spots, scars, and sores. Apply a small amount of this cream to the affected area to avoid it drying out.

    Step 6: Use Face Oil

Apply a few drops of facial oil to prevent moisture loss and protect your skin. This is especially useful for dry skin. Use formulas that contain saturated or monounsaturated fats.

Step 7: Night Creme or Sleeping Mask

End the day with a night cream or sleeping mask. If you have oily skin, choose a lightweight gel-type moisture cream that absorbs quickly and maintains the skin’s oil-water balance overnight. For dry, combination, or normal skin, use the cream-based heavy formula. Moisturizers keep skin supple and young.

Follow the above sequence for day and night skin care. However, take these into consideration to achieve the desired results.
