This page explains how names are chosen on Namkosh, how meanings are checked and how mistakes are corrected.
नाम कसरी छानिन्छ / How names are chosen
नेपालमा प्रचलित छोरा र छोरीका नाम, संस्कृत मूलका नाम, र नेपालका केही समुदायमा चलेका नाम छानिन्छन्। छोरा र छोरीका नाम छुट्टाछुट्टै देखाइन्छ।
We choose names in common use in Nepal, names of Sanskrit origin, and some names used in Nepali communities. Boy and girl names are shown separately.
अर्थ कसरी जाँचिन्छ / How meanings are checked
- अर्थ पक्का भएमा मात्र लेखिन्छ।
- शंका भए “अर्थ पुष्टि गर्नुहोस् / verify meaning” लेखिन्छ।
- उत्पत्ति, संस्कृत मूल र प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तिको नाम पक्का भएमा मात्र राखिन्छ।
- एउटै नामको अर्थ भाषा र परम्परा अनुसार फरक हुन सक्छ; त्यस्तो अवस्थामा सामान्य अर्थ मात्र दिइन्छ।
A meaning is written only when we are confident, doubtful names are marked verify meaning, and origins, roots and famous people are listed only when certain. The meaning of one name can differ by language and tradition, in which case we give the general meaning.

राशि र नामाक्षर / Rashi and naming letters
नामाक्षर तालिका प्रचलित परम्परामा आधारित छ र पञ्चाङ अनुसार सानो फरक हुन सक्छ। नामको छोटो “अ” ध्वनिलाई (म, क, र आदि) तालिकाको मा, का, रा अक्षर र “आ” लाई “अ” मानिन्छ। जन्मराशि भने ज्योतिषीले जन्म मिति, समय र ठाउँबाट निकाल्छन्।
The letter chart follows a commonly used tradition and can differ slightly by almanac. A short a-sound (म, क, र and so on) is read as the chart letter मा, का, रा, and आ is read as अ. The birth rashi itself is worked out by an astrologer from the birth date, time and place.
स्वतन्त्रता र विज्ञापन / Independence and ads
विज्ञापनले नामका सूची वा अर्थलाई असर गर्दैन, र पैसा लिएर कुनै नाम माथि राखिँदैन।
Ads do not affect the name lists or meanings, and no name is placed higher for payment.

Meanings are matched with Sanskrit and Nepali dictionaries and reliable references. If in doubt, the name is marked verify meaning.
